Joseph Pilates

History of Pilates
Joseph Pilates, born in Germany in 1880, originally created the Pilates method. As a child he suffered with various illnesses and weaknesses and as a result began to study Anatomy and Physical fitness to improve his own health and physique. He was so successful with his achievements that he was asked to model for anatomy charts.
During World War 1, based in a camp in the UK he used his knowledge to help rehabilitate bedridden patients, using bedsprings and equipment. It is believed that when the flu epidemic spread across the world in 1918, not one of his followers died, although the illness killed thousands of others in the UK!
His success took him to New York City where his work attracted the likes of ballet dancers, actors and athletes. Today Pilates attracts many well-known personalities in the sports and entertainment world.
Pilates continues to grow, with practitioners all over the world enjoying the benefits it brings.
